Light Hearts
This communal light installation formed a lively gathering space in the heart of Melbourne, Federation Square.
At the centre of Federation Square’s Light in Winter Festival was Light Hearts, a 13m-high pyramid that became our first large-scale communal art project.
Each layer was made of pre-loved City of Melbourne street lights, hundreds of illuminated red, green and blue LEDs, linked together with perspex tubes as a structural base. Light Hearts organically evolved throughout the month with community contributions of handmade lanterns, additions of yarn bombing and pop-up performances.
The 2011 program comprised of 160 events, forums, workshops, light installations and community celebrations.
Light Hearts was our first large-scale communal art project. It provided a focal point for the community, with the opportunity for people of all ages to contribute to the work.
