Illumina: Return to Sky
K’gari, formerly Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site in Queensland, Australia. RAMUS has unveiled a permanent laser, light, and sound show at Kingfisher Bay Resort, designed to bring the island to life at nightfall.
If the island could speak, what would it say?
This was the leading creative question from RAMUS studio when engaged to build a light show for our client Kingfisher Bay Resort… and from this emerged the vision for Return to Sky.
Set in a natural amphitheatre with lake, sky and trees as the visual canvas, the island reveals its timeless beauty through a symphony of lasers, lights and music.
Return to Sky takes the viewer on a journey of the cycles of the island, an intimate conversation between earth, sky and water, an immersive experience that moves at ‘island time’ gently but powerfully expressing the continual, dynamic movement of the world’s largest sand island.
RAMUS designed the amphitheatre, incorporating a seating platform, sculptural LED walkways, floating water lily-shaped lake lights, and fern sculptures surrounding the lake, along with show features like lasers, fog effects, and audio. Kingfisher Bay Resort utilized their on-island fabrication and building teams, supported by local mainland suppliers, to execute the construction work.
“The inspiration behind ‘Return to Sky’ came directly from the island itself. It is an inner space, a light within, that the island allows us to feel, and it is constantly being regenerated, just like us, from its birth in the stars, to its return.”
